Summer Track & Field Athletes Begin Quest for Spot at National Meets

June 1, 2014

Madison Area Eastside Sharks Track & Field athletes will begin qualifying rounds for the Hersey, USATF and AAU National Meets. To reach the National Meet the athletes will have to attain by gender and age groupings a predetermined finish in an event in order to move on to the next level of competition.

First, the qualifying standards for the National Hersey Meet. There will be a Local Meet (June 3rd at LHS, Madison), a District Meet (June 7th at Edgewood HS, Madison), and the State Meet (June 28th at West Allis HS, West Allis). The athlete must finish 1st in there event in order to continue on to the next level. Once you have placed first in the Wisconsin State Meet, your event time or distance will be placed in a 10 State Regional qualifier. If your event time or distance is the best of any of the 10 States in our region, you will then go to the National Hersey Meet in Hersey, PA. Since 1992 the Eastside Sharks Track & Field program has had five individual event athletes and one relay team participate in the National Hersey Meet.

Next, USATF National Meet qualifying standards. There will be three levels of competition, State Meet (June 12-14th at Carroll University, Waukesha), Region 8 Meet (July 3-6th at Burke HS, Omaha, NE), and the USATF National Meet (July 21-27th at the University of Houston, Houston, TX). At the Wisconsin State Meet if you finish in the top 6 in your event you qualify for the USATF Regional Meet. The Regional Meet top 5 finishers in each event will advance to the USATF National Meet. In the past 22 years, the Eastside Sharks have had over 400 track and field athletes that have qualified and participated in the USATF National Meets.

And last, the AAU National Meet qualifying standards. There also will be three levels of competition, State Meet (June 21st at Carroll University, Waukesha), Region 14 Meet (June 26-29th, Brooklyn Center HS, Minneapolis, MN), with the AAU National Meet (July 25th-August 2nd being held at Drake University, Des Moines, IA). The top 8 finishers in each event at the Wisconsin State Meet will qualify for the Regional Meet. While the top 8 Regional Meet qualifiers in each event advance to the AAU National Meet. This will be only the 3rd year that the Eastside Sharks will participate in the AAU Track & Field National Program.

For the 40 plus athletes that have showed an interest in competing to qualify for these National Meets, and by doing so you are also taking on the responsibility of representing the Madison Area at the state, regional and national levels, we would like to wish them the best of luck!!!
